Risk Assessment

Aims and Objectives
This course is intended for those who conduct risk assessments in the workplace and record and act upon the results to comply with the requirements in The Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

The structure of the course
Effective risk assessment is not only a legal duty, it also represents sound commercial sense, as identifying hazards, analysing the risks and having the appropriate controls in place will prevent accidents from occurring. A thorough assessment of all risks is also a positive visible demonstration of your commitment to safety. This course incorporates HSE guidance and includes:

  • The reasons for conducting suitable and sufficient risk assessments
  • The main legislation relating to risk assessment
  • The difference between hazard and risk
  • The range of techniques to collect evidence for a risk assessment
  • The limitations of the techniques used to collect evidence for a risk assessment
  • How to identify a range of health and safety hazards
  • How to identify who might be harmed and how
  • How to calculate an appropriate initial risk rating
  • The factors affecting the severity of harm
  • The factors affecting the likelihood of harm being caused
  • How to identify and evaluate existing control measures
  • How to identify any additional control measures in order to reduce risk to an acceptable level
  • How to apply the hierarchy of controls under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
  • How to revise a risk rating to reflect additional controls
  • How to record the findings of a risk assessment
  • How to review and revise a risk assessment when necessary
  • How to make recommendations based on the findings of a risk assessment

Certification
Delegates must complete the practical risk assessment exercise in order to receive the risk assessor’s certificate.
